Spring home styling guide: ways to refresh your home for the season

Spring is one of my favourite seasons to style for. There’s something about the lighter mornings, the softer colours and the feeling of opening the windows again that makes the home feel ready for a little refresh.

Not a full change. Not a complete restyle. Just a few thoughtful updates that make your home feel lighter, softer and more in tune with the season.

That’s really how our Spring Edit comes together at Nuco. It’s inspired by the little changes we start to notice in nature at this time of year, from tulips and blossom to magnolia, soft greenery and lighter textures. Pieces that bring a gentle feeling of spring into your home, without feeling too bright, too trend-led or too far away from the calm, neutral style Nuco is known for.

 

How the Spring Edit comes together

Although spring feels like a fresh start, the collection actually begins much earlier than most people imagine.

By the time the Spring Edit arrives on the website, I’ve usually been working on it for months. The process often starts back in autumn, when I’m surrounded by Christmas pieces, winter foliage and candle holders, and spring flowers are probably the last thing on anyone else’s mind.

It usually begins with the florals. I’ll sit with samples, hold stems up to the light, look at the colour, bend the petals and check how the flower heads sit from every angle.

Faux flowers really do come down to the details. The soft curve of a tulip stem, the delicacy of blossom, the shape of a magnolia branch, the colour running through a peony petal, or whether a hydrangea has enough fullness to feel realistic from across the room.

For every stem that makes it into the collection, there are always several that don’t.

Once the florals are chosen, I start building the combinations. This is the part I love most. Pairing bouquets with vases, placing stems in different rooms, adding trays, candle holders or smaller accessories, and seeing what feels right together in a real home.

Everything has to earn its place. If a piece doesn’t make me stop and look twice when I walk past it, it doesn’t make the edit.

 

Look to nature for your spring palette

Spring styling doesn’t have to mean bright colour everywhere. For Nuco, it’s usually a much softer interpretation of the season.

Think warm whites, soft blush, gentle greens, natural rattan, pale stone, textured ceramics and the occasional fresh floral note.

Tulips are perfect for adding movement and softness. Blossom and magnolia bring height and that lovely just-bloomed feeling. Peonies add a fuller, more romantic look, while hydrangeas are brilliant if you want something with more volume. Eucalyptus, catkins and simple greenery work beautifully when you want a quieter spring update.

The aim is to make your home feel fresher, not completely different.

 

Start with one floral swap

The quickest way to bring spring into your home is to change one arrangement.

A jug of tulips on a kitchen island, a soft peony bouquet on a console table, or a magnolia branch in a tall vase can instantly shift the feel of a room.

This is why I love styling with faux flowers. You can enjoy the feeling of seasonal flowers without worrying about them wilting after a few days. They can stay out through spring and summer, then be stored away and brought back out again next year.

If you’re not sure where to start, choose the spot you see most often. A hallway, kitchen island, sideboard or coffee table is usually enough to make the whole room feel lighter.

 

Use greenery where flowers feel too much

Not every surface needs a full bouquet.

Sometimes a few stems of eucalyptus, catkins or soft greenery are enough to make a space feel refreshed. These work beautifully in smaller places, such as a bathroom shelf, bedside table, windowsill or beside the kitchen sink.

Greenery is also a lovely way to connect different rooms. If you have a fuller bouquet in the hallway, a smaller vase of eucalyptus or a simple branch in another room can help the styling feel considered without everything matching too perfectly.

It’s a softer way to bring spring into your home.

 

Lighten your surfaces

Spring styling is as much about what you take away as what you add.

After winter, surfaces can start to feel a little heavy. Darker accessories, extra candle holders, seasonal pieces and fuller arrangements all have their place, but spring is a lovely time to clear things back slightly.

Try choosing three or four pieces for a shelf, mantel, console table or coffee table, and give them a little more space.

A vase, a smaller decorative object and a candle holder can often be enough. If you’re styling a tray, think about one taller piece, one lower piece and something practical, such as coasters or a small dish.

This is where natural textures work beautifully. Rattan, marble, fluted details, soft ceramics and simple glass pieces all help a surface feel lighter, while still adding interest.

 

Bring in texture, not just colour

One of the easiest ways to make a neutral home feel seasonal is through texture.

In spring, I naturally move towards lighter materials and softer finishes. Rattan trays, pale marble, cream ceramics, ribbed vases, woven coasters and softer candle holders all help create that fresher feeling without needing lots of colour.

This is especially useful if you prefer a calm, neutral home all year round. You don’t have to add bright yellow or bold floral prints to make a room feel like spring. A few natural textures and soft floral stems can do the job beautifully.

 

Style for real life too

For me, a home should never be just about how it looks. It should feel good to live in.

That’s why I always think about function as well as style. A tray can make a coffee table feel tidier. Coasters are useful, but still lovely enough to leave out. A diffuser adds scent as well as softness. A candle holder brings warmth in the evening, even when the days are lighter.

These are the little details that make a home feel cared for and enjoyable, not just styled for a photograph.

Spring is a lovely time to think about how your home feels day to day. The scent when you walk into a room. The flowers you see when you come downstairs. The coffee table you sit beside in the evening. Small things, but they make a difference.

 

Refresh your table without waiting for an occasion

Spring is also a lovely time to bring a little more thought to everyday dining.

You don’t need a special occasion. A simple runner, a low arrangement in the centre of the table, a few candle holders or tealights, and suddenly an ordinary meal feels a little more considered.

Tulips, smaller hydrangeas, greenery or a low bowl arrangement all work beautifully here. The key is to keep the centrepiece low enough that people can still see each other across the table.

It’s a simple way to make everyday moments feel a little more special.

 

Choose pieces that will last beyond spring

Although this is a spring styling guide, I always try to choose pieces that won’t feel out of place once the season has passed.

Soft whites, warm neutrals, muted greens, natural textures and realistic faux florals will carry you through spring and summer, but they can also be used again in different ways throughout the year.

A well-chosen vase, a realistic bouquet, a textured tray or a simple candle holder should be something you come back to, not something you only enjoy for a few weeks.

That’s always in my mind when choosing pieces for Nuco. Seasonal enough to make your home feel refreshed, but timeless enough to keep using.
